Tools To Get Started
Ok. so you have an idea of where you want to go. Or maybe you don’t… That’s OK, here are the tools that I used when I got started looking for my small farm land. All of these tools are FREE and can be used with your PC running Windows… or in my case, one of those new Apple Mac’s running OS X.

All of these sources were used to help me narrow down the area that I wanted to look at. They generally give you an idea of what areas are more expensive than others too. Many of the listing sites allow you to filter your search results by a number of different of factors including access to electricity and water, main roads, towns, views, and terrain such as lake, mountain, forest etc.
The next tools that I used helped me get an idea of the demographics of the area including, crime rate, median income, climate, schools etc. This is a very important step and should not be overlooked. The following are a couple of tools to use…

Once you have narrowed down your search to a particular area you can use tools like Craigslist, Yahoo, or Google to find real estate companies in the area you are looking. Many of the sites previously mentioned will also include the real estate agency listing the property. This is actually how I located my land. I narrowed down an area using the website “Lands of America” then looked at all the properties a particular agency had listed.
